The "FIRE" Sticker (or "traditional FIRE" as it is sometimes referred to), was the first reflective Sticker introduced by The Gamewell Company in the 1940's to replace the then-popular (non-reflective) diagonal "white stripe" decal featured on the narrow sides of their Fire Alarm Boxes.
The material chosen for this Sticker was a relatively new product developed by the 3M company. It was called "Scotchlite". The original concept of this reflective sheeting was developed quite by accident, and resulted in a classic case of turning "Lemons into Lemonade".
Scotchlite's original application was designed as a new type of road and highway stripe to replace the traditional use of paint and tiny glass beads. It was quickly determined that this reflective material was far too fragile for use as a pavement marking. As a result, 3M engineers found it was well suited for use on signs and the rest as they say...is history! (and yes, they did finally invent "Scotch-Brite" a much heavier-duty tape for road and highway stiping use).
With the advent of additional types of Boxes, new titles or "legends" have been utilized. In addition, several departments use custom made stickers with information suited to their particular need, region or language.
The "FIRE" Sticker is suited for all models of Alarm Boxes and is the most universally recognized title available. In many instances, departments further increase Box visibility by installing additional FIRE Stickers on the front and back of Box Pedestals.
This sticker measures 11" tall by 4" wide. It is printed with Red lettering on White reflective sheeting and is fully reflective 24 hours a day...even when wet!
